Topic > The Two Sides of the Civil War: Robert E.'s Perspectives...

There are always two sides to every story. Which side you want to believe, though, is up to you, what you think happened, and who you trust more. During the Civil War it was clear that there were two sides; the North and the South. Which side you were on didn't depend on what you believed, but on where you came from. For some people this has been difficult. They believed we could get rid of the slaves and just wanted the war to end, but because they were from Virginia they had to fight for the Confederacy. One of the men this happened to was Robert E. Lee. He was fighting with the Confederacy and his son was fighting with the Union. That alone would be difficult and then you add that he didn't want to fight: “I will cry for my country and for the well-being and progress of humanity.” He was very against the war, yet he fought it anyway. This is why most people fought in the civil war, yet it continued to go on, endlessly. A man who had a very important role and influence in the war was none other than Abraham Lincoln. Some say he was reminded that the war ended because of his famous speech at the Battle of Gettysburg. Both Robert E. Lee and Abraham Lincoln were involved in the war and saw some things the same way, but disagreed about others in their writings. One thing Lincoln and Lee had in common was that they wanted this Civil War to end. as soon as possible. When we read Lincoln's speech you realize everything that happened. In three days 51,000 people died. There was nowhere to put all the bodies; nothing done to clean the ground of all the spilled blood. When you really think about all the people who died in this battle it's horrible and to think that this is just one of the battles that... middle of paper... in the centuries to come, how moving it was and how much impact it had on the North and the South. He put the blame on the people if the nation were to collapse and took it away himself with this speech. “Of the people, by the people, for the people…” These are the words of Abraham's famous Gettysburg Address and they couldn't be more accurate. This was a ceremony for people like Robert Lee who fought in this war and who gave up their loved ones as he gave up his son. The union and the confederacy were both very sure of what they wanted and they wouldn't stop until they got what they wanted or they just couldn't fight anymore and that's what happened in the south. They ran out of everything they needed to fight a war. So as a result of that, the North ended up winning and a lot of that victory is due to what Abraham Lincoln had to say at that ceremony.
