The influence of a person's genes and the type of atmosphere they were created in have an impact on their personality. For example, at a young age doctors diagnosed Jimmy Mendez with low amygdala activity. The amygdala is the part of the brain responsible for emotions such as guilt. As Mendez grew up, he often committed illicit acts and felt no guilt. He stole, lied, and hurt feelings without feeling any pain or remorse. When his parents realized his dispassionate behavior, they showed him the error of his ways. Although Mendez still had little activity in his amygdala, he was able to see the horrific result of his Hitler-like behavior. With the care of his parents, Mendez was able to overcome a genetic anomaly and act as a compassionate human being should.
