Dr. Benjamin McLane Spock was born on May 2, 1903. Dr. Spock was an American pediatrician and author of The Common Sense Book on Baby and Child Care. His book has been sold worldwide and translated into 42 languages. Dr. Spock wanted parents everywhere to simply follow common sense, because he believed it was the right and proper way to care for children. Dr. Spock has had a lasting impact on mothers around the world. Many say that Dr. Spock's book is second in popularity to the Bible. Generation after generation is raised by the beliefs and customs of Dr. Spock. Spock is the eldest of 6 brothers and was born into a prosperous family in New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Spock's father was a lawyer and his mother had an illustrious background. Spock ended up attending Yale University in 1921. At Yale, Dr. Spock met the love of his life Jane Cheney. Dr. Spock participated in the Paris Olympics in 1924 where he won the gold medal for the United States in rowing. Benjamin Spock attended Yale Medical School in hopes of becoming a pediatric doctor. After Spock married, he transferred to Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, where he graduated at the top of his class. While Spock worked with children as a pediatrician, he learned that many of the questions most parents asked were connected to the past. to psychological problems. This made Spock believe that all pediatricians should have some basic knowledge of psychology. Dr. Spock soon believed that it was better to encourage children, rather than have the harsh, rigid, moralistic approach that many parents try to adopt. Dr. Spock wanted to change America's child-rearing practices. Benjamin thought that what better way to bring his ideas to the center of the paper was life, than through his ideas and research. Spock was very aware that he and his parents had failed to follow the ideals of his book, but Spock had experienced the challenges of the rigorous child-rearing methods of his past and wanted to change that. Ultimately Spock didn't want any child to have the childhood he had, but unfortunately Spock didn't realize that not everyone is the same and that every single person has a different take on an experience.
