Topic > An analysis of the setting and tone of The Wizard of Oz...

The Wizard of Oz is a fictional story written by L. Frank Baum. The story has two main settings. The first setting is Dorothy's home, the Kansas prairies. The grasslands are described as dry and grey. The second setting is the land of Oz. Oz is the opposite of Kansas, it's colorful, bright and full of joy. The Wizard of Oz has an important theme or message behind the story. The message is that we all have good qualities in us, but it is up to us to use them. The story begins when a cyclone hits the one-bedroom farmhouse where Dorothy lives with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em. Dorothy and her dog Toto were blown away with the house by the cyclone. Then, the cyclone drops the house in the Land of Oz on top of the Wicked Witch of the East. The Munchkins give the witch's silver shoes to Dorothy. The Good Witch of the North suggests that the Wizard of Oz might be able to help her find her way home. With the advice of the Good Witch, Dorothy puts on the Silver Slippers and begins walking the Yellow Brick Road that will take her to the Wizard in the Emerald City. Along the way he meets the Scarecrow perched on a pole and drags him away. He tells her he has no brains, but he doesn't want to be thought of as a fool. She convinces him to accompany her to the Emerald City, to see if the Wizard can give him a brain. The Yellow Brick Road takes Dorothy, Toto and the Scarecrow into a large, dense forest. Along the way, Dorothy discovers how the Scarecrow was made and how he failed to scare the crows out of the cornfield. While walking, the travelers encounter a Tin Woodman who has rusted and become immobile due to a storm. Dorothy finds a jar of oil to oil the Lumberjack's joints. She also discovers that the Woodsman has been human to...... middle of paper ...... to take her to any place he wants. After saying goodbye to her friends, Dorothy holds Toto in her arms, clicks the heels of her silver shoes three times, and says, "Take me home to Aunt Em!" In three steps they take her back to Kansas. There he discovers that Uncle Henry has built a new house to replace the one that the cyclone had taken away. But he also discovers that the Silver Slippers have disappeared forever. Finally, Aunt Em notices Dorothy and takes her into her arms. Dorothy announces that she is happy to be home again. I would recommend reading The Wizard of Oz. The story is great for all ages. The message told in the story is a good reminder for us too. We constantly need to be reminded that we choose the qualities we possess. When I don't feel like I've been kind I think about all the things I do throughout the day to remind myself even if it's holding the door for someone.
