Truthfulness and Fidelity in Nursing: Personal and Professional ValuesNot only is it important to know our established personal values when it comes to providing nursing care, it is also a valuable skill as preceptor or trainer of nurses to notice and evaluate, as well as possibly report, issues of ethical concern. There are standards of care and ethical components established by the American Nurses Association (ANA) that assist nurses in this process. The models of care and nursing theories used in our individual healthcare systems can also point us in the right direction regarding appropriate patient care by telling the truth and keeping promises. Communication is a key factor not only in the nurse-patient relationship, but also in the relationship we have with our nursing colleagues and with the institution in which we practice. After all, it is nurses who are responsible for maintaining the integrity of our profession. Telling the truth and keeping promises: Fundamentals of the nurse-patient relationship The right thing to do was obvious, when put from the perspective of the patient and the nurse-patient. relation. Tele-nursing involves a special type of nurse-patient relationship, which must be developed with an immediate rapport and understanding of trust with the caller (Nagel, Pomerleau & Penner, 2013). Patients connect with the provider and, by extension, nursing staff after hours, and place their trust in their provider at a potentially vulnerable time (Carter, 2009). While training a nurse who was new to telephone triage, it became apparent to me through several calls and transactions that the nurse was not being honest in her interactions. There is no room in this type of nurse-patient relationship to attempt... middle of paper... and transitions (5th ed.). New York: McGraw-Hill.Nagel DA, Pomerleau SG, and Penner JL. (2013).
