Animal Farm is about a group of animals who take control of the farm in search of freedom and equality, but over time, following bad decisions, one animal takes control of everyone. Animal Farm is an example of a dystopia because it is based on five of the nine traits that dystopias have: restrictions, fear, dehumanization, conformity, and control. One quality of a dystopia that is very well represented in Animal Farm is restriction. . The animals had seven commandments that must always be followed and four of them were restrictions. One restriction given to animals was "no animal shall ever wear clothes" (19): animals were prohibited from wearing clothes because only humans were supposed to wear them. Another restriction on animals stated that "no animal may ever drink alcohol" (19). Animals couldn't drink alcohol because only humans did and alcohol made them act crazy. One of the main restrictions placed on animals was "no animal shall kill any other animal" (19). This restriction of not killing was imposed by other animals for all animals to follow. Animal Farm has many examples of dystopia, but the strongest quality of one is restriction. In Animal Farm, fear is used to keep animals under control. The old major said to the animals: “Man is the only real enemy we have. Remove man from the scene and the root cause of hunger and overwork will be abolished forever. Fear was also used by Squealer when he says "surely there is no one among you who wants to see Jones return?"(28) The pigs knew that the animals had been mistreated by Johns and that no one wanted him back, so the pigs they asked for more food so that the customers would not return to the farm. Napoleon forced the animals to do what he wanted by scaring them into thinking that Snowball was betraying them “it was stated that Snowball was hiding in Foxwood”(63) Napoleon told the animals that Snowball was doing all kinds of bad things, and that some animals were afraid to sleep. Control is used in animal farm to keep animals away from disobedience. Napoleon took control of the farm by controlling the animals and had Snowball chased away by "nine enormous dogs".(43) Napoleon had Snowball chased away by the dogs because he had different views than Napoleon, and Napoleon wanted to control the animals with his ideas.
