William Golding's book Lord of the Flies is a novel based on a group of schoolchildren who were flying in a plane to escape World War II and were shot down. They were shot down on a deserted tropical island in Britain. The boys have endured a large fire that burned the island, little food, and a boy who wants to kill everyone by the end of the book. Upon arriving on the island, the two main characters' Piggy and Ralph find a shell, which they believe could help them find the other boys. Ralph was the appointed leader for the boys. Jack, one of the other kids stranded on the island, was assigned the task of finding food for everyone to eat. The boys Ralph, Jack and Simon go to explore the island and see what's on it. Upon returning from the walk around the island, Ralph decides they need to make a fire. He thinks the smoke from the fire will attract the attention of other planes flying over the island.
