A romantic hero is a person who appears to be an outcast, he may be rich or not, he will have his own moral codes, his life is full of conflicts, which he manages to overcome and wins. He is also in tune with nature and its feelings. The romantic hero is a rebel who ignores the rules established by society in search of his own personal fulfillment. Mary Shelly supports and criticizes the concept in her novel. Frankenstein displays many traits of the romantic hero. He is in tune with nature, has intense feelings that guide his actions, periods where he is alone and is seen as the underdog, his moral code is questionable, and suffocation is ever-present in his life. He is very much driven by his emotions: “My temper was sometimes violent and my passions vehement” (p.19). He too was overwhelmed by emotions while trying to create his creation, "no one can conceive the variety of feelings that dragged me, like a hurricane, into the first enthusiasm of success" (p. 32). There are many things that prove that he has his own moral code. He sees nothing wrong with creating a creature or torturing animals for the benefit of his work. “A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures owe their existence to me” (p. 32). He has many conflicts in his life, all self-induced. He is isolated while working on his creation “I became painfully nervous: I became painfully nervous; the falling of a leaf frightened me and I avoided my fellow men as if I had been guilty of a crime. (page 34). He loses many affections at the hands of the creature he created and spends his life struggling to put an end to what he created. The Monster is in my opinion portrayed as the true romantic hero....... middle of paper... ... but your horror cannot match that with which I regard myself” (p. 165) and vows to kill himself. Mr. Walton has to give up his dream for the sake of his troupe, which makes him a true hero. In conclusion, I think that the romantic hero is a very important character in literature. The romantic hero creates passion, excitement and is relatable. It was my first time reading Frankenstein and I loved it. I think I found the monster to be the most romantic hero who had to overcome so much and yet still suffer. If only he had been treated properly since his creation, if he had been met with the acceptance he desired, would he have been a monster? I think he suffered only because he was not accepted by society and his creator and like a child ignored by a parent he acts to get his attention. This book is an excellent example of a romantic hero.
