Music is used to create stories, make history, spread religion and pass the time. During the times of slavery, African Americans used music to pass the time and forget about their problems for a while. In the 1970s hippies used song lyrics as a method of protest. Without music, America would not be as culturally developed and artistically modernized. In the 1900s the music became a popular trend in America. Genres such as folk music, opera singing and ballads became a popular trend during this period. Music shops opened and started selling sheet music and it was an instant success. Song pluggers, which was another name for musicians, carried pianos around in horse-drawn carriages to play to the delight of audiences. On Saturday evenings, barber quartets performed in the streets. Films and Broadway began using music in their productions. In 1903, radios began playing music that inspired the hand-cranked victrola.
