Topic > What I Learned in English 111 - 1256

With my first semester as a college student coming to an end, I can honestly say that I have gained so much knowledge and this has been an eye-opening experience. By taking your English 111 course, I learned a lot about myself as a writer and communicator. English was a subject I took for granted because I always considered it easy and there wasn't much to do. You helped me understand that to write a good article it is important to have a deeper understanding of the many structures and uses; as well as a better understanding of yourself and your audience. In what seems like such a short time, I have learned rhetorical knowledge, the writing process, oral communication, critical thinking/reading/writing, and digital technology. One of the very first things I learned was rhetorical knowledge, which is the means of understanding communication and how to communicate better. What really helped me understand this concept was the rhetorical triangle (insert link to notes). I now have a better understanding of how to communicate better during my writing. I can use my purpose as an author to create a message that will influence my audience and meet their expectations. I have used this knowledge in my other lessons and have noticed improvements; for example, with my SDV portfolio (insert hyperlink) I met Professor Morrison's expectations and received a God grade. This is proof of my hard work and understanding of rhetorical knowledge. Another concept we looked at was the appeals triangle (insert notes). So I learned about ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos is gaining the trust of your audience. Pathos is the ability to sense the emotions of your audience and place them within your work… in the middle of the paper… A more useful technique has often been to run timed tests with music on YouTube. This helped our minds get used to shutting out all distractions and noise. Noise (insert hyperlink to noise) is any type of distraction or interruption that will prevent you from getting things done or even understanding something; For example, pets, emotions, attitudes and interests. These are just a few of the many types of noise. Overall, I learned so much in English 111 and really enjoyed taking your class. Everything I have learned will help stick with me into my continued college years. I hope I have shown you that the things you have taught have actually helped me and that I have gained so much knowledge about myself as a writer and communicator. Your lessons were very interesting and you made them enjoyable to learn. Thanks for a great semester.
