This was great for Chile until the earthquake. After the earthquake, the economy grew at a lower rate of 2 percent between 1961 and 1936.3 Then, in 1964-65, the country experienced a second recession. As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, the losses amounted to approximately $550 million, however, to this day the cost remains unknown. To repair the damage, the Chilean state invested 136.4 million dollars from donations and 292.6 million from the government. It is estimated that 40% of Valdivia's homes were destroyed. Houses and buildings constructed of concrete were hit the hardest. Wooden houses fared better. The 1960 Chile earthquake is the largest earthquake in human history recorded in the 20th century. It left a scar on many people's hearts. Obviously I wasn't born in that period, but my grandmother was and she lived in Chile at the time. More than 50 years have passed and she still remembers this horrible event in human history. I have been living in this country for a while and we are still waiting for the “big one”.
