Duality is an example of opposition or contrast between two concepts or two aspects of something. Duality can also be represented by two separate entities, or people, opposing each other. “Duality in people exists as qualities seemingly in opposition to each other.” (Dualism in film) The definition of duality can be seen in many ways, in modern cinema however the meaning of duality is more specific, although its definition does not vary too much from the common one. In the film, duality is the contrast of two people or entities. These two entities, however, can be represented in different ways. Duality can be an internal conflict, as seen in Black Swan (2010) by Darren Aronofsky and Fight Club (1999) by David Fincher, a split personality or a change of character, as seen in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy and Star by George Lucas. The Wars saga, or duality, can be depicted as one character and their personality versus another character and their personality, as seen in Black Swan, The Dark Knight Trilogy, and The Star Wars Saga. Since a director cannot bluntly say in the film, without ruining the illusion of the world he has created, that one character represents another, or that these two entities represent each other and are dual, there are various techniques that a director can use to plant this idea or theme of dualism in the minds of the viewers. My goal is to discover how the theme of duality is represented through the main characters of the Star Wars saga, the Dark Knight trilogy, Fight Club and Black Swan. The duality in the characters is expressed in many ways and during the pre- production, production and post-production, the director must make sure that ev...... middle of paper ......the narrator's confusion and the internal struggle within himself to try to understand what is happening in the his head, why he has a dual personality and how to destroy it. Depending on what the director wants to convey through the images of the film and how he wants to represent the theme of duality through these images, the film will convey this message to the audience in this way. “These films show us that dualism is an intrinsic part of human existence. They illustrate that good and evil coexist, often in the same person or place. People are complicated. You don't have to flatten your character into a single dimension to understand them. Rather, it is enough to understand that seemingly disparate qualities, whether good and bad or masculine and feminine, can coexist to create a complex dynamic in people's psychology."
