Religious freedom around the world is under threat as a whole, but not by you. If not from you, then from whom? Your government is the answer. We all have different views on how well we believe our government runs our country, but are they overreaching with their power? In the same way that Napoleon destroyed the philosophy of animalism in Animal Farm, today governments in other countries are doing the same to the beliefs of their own people. An important example is the destruction of religion in Indonesia. In 2005, the Indonesian Council of Ulama issued a decree declaring that the Ahmadiyya should suspend public workshops and religious teaching in public schools (Schulzke 2). “This violates the freedom of religion guaranteed by the Constitution.” (Schulzke 2). This law was immediately attacked by Indonesia's largest Islamic organization, claiming that it would violate the First Amendment of the constitution. The law was created to stop teachings that deviate from the main teachings of Islam. This law, enforced by the government, was considered a “deviant act” or abuse by the government in the eyes of its people (Schulzke 2). This is important to understand because it shows how governments can restrict religious views without many consequences beyond a few protesters. Religious issues also appear in the book Animal Farm, written about 60 years ago. “The pigs had a very difficult time making it clear that this was against the spirit of Animalism.” (Orwell 7). This quote shows the spirit of Animalism, Animalism being the characteristic or appropriate behavior of animals, particularly in physical and instinctive being.
