What is wiretapping? Maybe you're wondering that right now. Wiretapping is “the monitoring of telephone and Internet conversations by third parties, often by covert means. The interception took this name because historically the monitoring connection was a real electrical socket on the telephone line", according to Google's definition, taken from Wikipedia. Where did it all begin? Wiretapping began in the 1890s, along with the telephone recorder. It was originally intended for international defense, not invasion of privacy. In 1967, the Supreme Court decided that a warrant was required to wiretap a telephone. A few years later a law was passed allowing the use of wiretaps for criminal investigations. Just under 30 years later, Congress passed the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act, which “requires telephone companies to be able to install more effective wiretaps.” In 2005, President Bush admitted that he was against the Fourth Amendment and was “tapping phones” illegally. He also argued that it was necessary to keep America safe from terrorism and that he could help in the investigation of the September 11 attack on the Twin Towers. However, the general population was unaware of this until it was brought to attention by the NSA. Now, wiretaps are supposedly safe and mostly banned and/or controlled in most countries, especially democracies. But that doesn't mean they don't lie to us, which our government has done in the past. Many people believe that wiretaps are not a good thing at all, because they feel like they are being stalked or spied on. Now can you blame them for feeling this way? You would most likely feel this way too. And... half of the paper... from the online site ebscohost.com. Although before learning this information, I didn't like the idea of wiretaps at all. Now that I have facts that support theories and real happenings with the president, etc., I've just become convinced that wiretaps are pretty much no good for anyone, except at times when people are trying to be protected, but even then, it's just not the best idea. The government always tries to cover it up and I think everyone who knows these lies is pretty fed up with it too, and I especially don't think it's fair that they can just access any mobile device quite easily and find out the truth about anyone, including personal information of which he has no right to know. I hope this essay has changed your opinion if you didn't already have a bad idea about wiretaps.
