Topic > Canada's Role in World Peacekeeping - 1023

Peacekeeping has played a significant role in defining and shaping the country that Canada is today. Canada's role was considered by many to be insufficient in major issues affecting the world's traditional powers. Canada subsequently began to gain some forms of credibility as it fought for the common good of the nations of the world and not just their allies. Recently, since 1995, the role Canada plays in UN peacekeeping efforts has decreased significantly, much of this due to UN military missions through NATO rather than just the UN. Because of this, the role this country has played in peacekeeping missions has decreased significantly compared to what it was in the past. Canada's role as peacekeeper was played out significantly in the 1950s when it began; a major achievement of this was due to the man named Lester Pearson. Peacekeeping operations played an important role in the war as they allowed combatants to try to resort to a more effective solution rather than fighting or going to war and causing a conflict. Peacekeeping in this country is particularly notable for being able to deploy its troops so quickly on important missions that require attention. In today's society the United Nations in Canada is responsible for carrying out peace operations, what this country tries to do in these missions is to bring peace to areas that are suffering a lot and need some form of sustainable peace. The traditional role of these operations is to provide long-term development assistance and to work with the United Nations to ensure that the best operations are brought to the table and that they are executed effectively. Peacekeeping doesn't just involve the military, well... middle of paper... with the United Nations it seems like the job has been done, this not only looks good for us Canadians but also helps when dealing to develop relationships with other countries, it means to these nations that we are there to help and not to cause conflicts which tend to result in some peacekeeping operations. Peace will not be achieved just by taking part in these missions, there too must be support from an economic, social and political point of view, especially in countries where there always seems to be some form of peace problem. Through Canada's continued efforts in peacekeeping operations, we will continue to become more effective and better able to serve the needs of developing nations. Canada was one of the first countries to step forward to adapt these missions and it looks like they will continue to do so for quite some time now.
