It is common belief that food insecurity negatively impacts food insecurity, but how should a food secure individual react when someone else's food insecurity negatively impacts their your personal experiences? Phion is a blogger whose concerns reflect American sentiment regarding the rights of food stamp users. Phion recounts a recent trip he and his wife took to Sam's Club where they were stuck in line behind a woman with "two shopping carts full of racks of ribs, filets, pork chops, soda, a ton of junk food, ribeyes , and a bunch of other things totaling over $800. And he paid with his EBT card [a type of debit card for food stamp recipients]." This encounter left Phion in a state of anger and disbelief. He couldn't reconcile the fact that he and his wife were struggling to save money to plan for life expansions (e.g. home ownership, children, etc.), while this woman was shopping to feed a king and his court with taxpayer dollars. With deep frustration and envy, Phion imagines a reality in which he could afford to purchase high-quality food with “other people's redistributed money.” Phion expands his thinking to consider why others “don't have to.” be responsible for your own life”, when he and his wife must be responsible and self-sufficient for their own. Phion expresses concern that current welfare systems neglect to provide participants with any motivation not to take advantage of the resources offered. Exclaiming that people living on limited budgets or in poverty should be influenced by programs to “stop having children they cannot pay, to be grateful for what they are given or encouraged to leave the system to support their existence”.
