Regardless of the environment you work in, communication is always vital and a key success factor. Communication happens both physically and verbally and is absolutely essential if you want to inform someone about something. “Loud shouting and even violence are symptoms of the disorder, not remedies.” (Adair 2009: 3). Communication has two main components; send a message to someone and ensure that the message is received correctly by the other member of the conversation. It is therefore fair to say that speaking and listening are vital to effective communication. This essay will initially introduce me as a student and my career. I will provide a simple SWOT analysis about myself and then go on to analyze the different methods and techniques of effective communication. Finally, I will talk about how effective communication is necessary in my current position, as well as in my future one. Computer Science is the name of my chosen degree. Once I graduate, I intend to become an IT Consultant. The position will be on a contract basis, meaning I will be employed by a company only for a period of time, until the completion of a certain project. If my help was still needed within the organization, then an extension could be arranged. Otherwise I will move on and work with another organization. The role seems temporary; however the pay is sufficient for this. The main thing I bring forward is my experience. In addition to experience, my communication with others in the organization is extremely important, as many jobs in this industry are promoted through "word of mouth." If I am an effective communicator, I will be able to receive a lot of advice and will be successful in the industry. If I am not an effective communicator... half a sheet of paper... using this form will be extremely beneficial to my future. If I have the opportunity to join the management sector in the IT industry, I believe I will have more confidence and have better listening skills. After this course, I clearly identified my strengths and weaknesses and the opportunities and threats they provide. I hope that if I apply the knowledge I gain from the course and apply it to the world of work, I will be able to handle situations with more confidence and show much more calmness and assertiveness. NLP can also be used more effectively when communicating with others. After the continuous and consistent teamwork available in this module, I believe that management is a more suitable career option for me. As seen above, effective communication can only be achieved with constant practice.
