This document will review and evaluate a qualitative study conducted by Beare and Hogg called "Listening In...to Gang Culture". It will discuss the purpose of the study and evaluate the methodological designs. The study examines the problem of street gangs and tries to understand how gang members behave. The authors used police wiretap transcripts as the primary source of data and analyzed them for further review. The findings show that social programs will need to be targeted at younger gang members to dissuade them from the gang lifestyle. Beare and Hogg conducted this research in an attempt to discover new information about gang behavior and gang characteristics in Canada (2013, p. 422). . Specifically, they examined three different aspects of gang culture: gang traffic laws, prison violence, and drug trafficking (Beare & Hogg, 2013, p. 421). Due to increased coverage of gang violence in the media and public fears, the topic has generated a renewed need for further investigation. Police and the criminal justice system have followed suit by targeting gang members in response to calls for a more restrictive approach to gangs. However, it appears that efforts to prevent gangs must begin with discouraging youth (Beare & Hoggs, 2013, p. 421). Although research on gangs and violence has been conducted previously, the authors wanted to examine the issue through a different methodological approach that could add to the existing literature. This research is exploratory or contextual research, which is “concerned with identifying what exists in the context of the social world and how it manifests itself” (Ritchie, 2003, p. 27).
