Topic > , “My hopes and ambitions for you” (Williams 14). Through this quote Williams incorporates anguish into Amanda's voice as she describes her ambition for Laura to succeed. You also hear: "So weak I can barely stand!" (Williams 14). These two quotes illustrate that Laura's being is extremely important to Amanda, and to some extent, she acts as if Laura's failure is her own failure. This sense of care that Amanda shows is essential in helping Laura create something of herself and appears to the reader as a deep aspiration of Amanda's conscience. While Troy only takes care of Cory because “It's my job…because it's my duty” (Wilson 38). Another way Amanda wants Laura to be happy is through her efforts in trying to make Laura a gentleman in the middle of the card, at Skinner's house for a game of dominoes. Bono has moved on from Troy and made a new friendship with the Skinners. Cory and Troy get into an argument which leads to Cory leaving and saying he'll "come back for my stuff" (Wilson 89). Troy responds, “They will be on the other side of the fence” (Wilson 89). Troy didn't lose Cory from his life by putting him out of his pen. In conclusion, Troy is significantly different from Amanda in his aggressive ways, making Amanda a better parent due to her more polite but determined character. These two characters have similarities and differences, but they both lead their families to ruin, yet somehow some family members benefit from it. For example, Tom, who finally leaves Amanda and Laura or Bono who is now a dependent or his son Cory, a proud marine.Works CitedFencesGlass menagerie
