The Triceratops (figure 1) was a herbivore that lived in the late Cretaceous period, approximately 125 million years ago. Triceratops existed at least 66 million years ago. It was a rhinoceros-like dinosaur that had a robust body structure. It had four legs, three horns and big eyes. Triceratops were very complex. Triceratops was discovered near Denver, Colorado in 1889. It was discovered by a paleontologist named Othniel C. Marsh. The first fossil discovered was mistakenly identified as an extinct species of buffalo. A Triceratops skull was discovered in 1888 by John Bell Hatcher. Most fossils have been found in North America. Most were found in the northern United States, southern parts of Canada. The fossils were in good condition and fairly intact when they were discovered in Denver. The scientific name of Triceratops is Triceratops, which means three-horned face. Othniel C. Marsh named the Triceratops. Othniel C. Marsh discovered many dinosaurs such as Allosaurus, Apatosaurus, Diplodocus, Stegosaurus, etc. Triceratops is part of the Ceratopsidae family together with Vegaceratops, Sinoceratops and Centrosaurus. It is classified by the horns on its head. Triceratops lived in the late Cretaceous. It lived approximately 68-65 million years ago. Triceratops are said to live in the area of ​​Wyoming, Colorado, and Canada, where they have cold winters. At that time tyrannosaurs dominated all their prey in North America. Giant penguin-like marine animals called Polycotylid Plesiosaurs also appeared in the oceans southward. At that time the Earth was still dominated by dinosaurs. Studies show that as Triceratops age, their frills soften and their horns become sharper. As they age they begin to resemble a completely different dinosaur called Torosaurus (figure 2). The paleontologist found many older Torosaurus fossils but never any of the younger Torosaurus. Could Triceratops be a younger Torosaurus? Nobody knows the answer to that infamous question. Triceratops were very interesting dinosaurs. They were very intelligent and strategic. They moved in packs and used calls for mating. They were very complex. They had an interesting body shape that gave them an advantage over their predators. They were known for their horns and parrot-like beaks. They were herbivores that lived in North America.
