Topic > Student-Led Teaching in Weimer's The Learner...

This concept takes responsibility from the teacher and places it on the student. This approach is in line with Merriam's self-directed learning theory in the new update on adult learning theory. In this approach, self-directed learning is identified as a concept that believes learning progresses from childhood to adulthood. Students are self-directed, and instructors are able to customize their instructional methods to meet the needs of these students. This approach supports the concept of distinguishing who is responsible for learning. As stated by Weimer (2013), students will depend on teachers to identify information that needs to be learned, prescribe learning methods, and evaluate how well the student has understood the material (p. 15). The concept of learning must be a shared responsibility of both the teacher and the student. Self-directed learning places responsibility on the student with the belief that students can be responsible for learning on their own and places responsibility on the teacher to educate appropriately
