IntroductionTeachers agree that absenteeism plays an important factor in students' performance in school. Parents, schools, communities and policy makers should find ways to encourage pupils' attendance. Much research is still needed on why student absenteeism is a problem. As student attendance declines, educational goals are affected, student achievement declines, and there is an impact on the community as a whole. There are many factors that impact a student's education, including family life, community safety, and public health. Where there is a lot of support in these areas, student attendance increases; where support is lacking, participation declines. I am researching whether there is a connection between absenteeism and academic performance. I worked for five years in a high school as a chemistry teacher and during this time I witnessed a huge amount of absenteeism every day.
