“People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their citizens." This quote is from the movie "V for Vendetta" which tells the story of a romantic freedom fighter (or callous terrorist seen from the government's point of view) who declares war on a totalitarian regime set in future England. The story draws strong parallels to the fascist regime of 1930s Nazi Germany and has similarities to the current US government's war on terror. Good morning class, today I will be analyzing how director James McTeigue explores different cinematic techniques and a variety of other cinematic elements, in order to convey the historical and political context of the story and effectively portray a visually appealing adaptation of the graphic novel 'V for Revenge'.“Remember, remember the fifth of November, the treason and the Gunpowder Plot, I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason should ever be forgotten.” This opening sentence of the film immediately creates a historical connection with November 5, 1605, when a group of conspirators, led by Guy Fawkes, and intent on restoring a Catholic king to the British throne, attempted to stockpile explosives under the chambers of the British parliament. and so destroy them in protest. The key character, V, in this story is inspired by the infamous Guy Fawkes, whose character symbolizes a courageous challenge to the authoritarian regime.
