Topic > The Foundation of Family and Friendship - 1152

Confucius considered family ties to be the backbone of the functioning of societies. To continue on the path to becoming an exemplary person (junzi), a family person must model how they are and should interact with their communities. A family model is the basis of Chinese communities. In a family the father is at the top, thus making the kids in the family the most important and the main focus of the parents. This is clear when the master states: “As a younger brother and son, be filial piety (xiao) at home and deferential (di) in the community; be cautious in what you say and then keep your word (xin). (pg. 72 Book 1.6) You have made it clear that it is the child's duty in the community and home to be involved with his family. This also describes the lack of involvement of women who have a voice because the quote continues to say keep your word but by not including the other gender it shows that she never had a voice or a word to begin with. Confucius emphasizes the importance of revering your parents because they are the ones who gave you the start in life. They honor you as their son by bringing to life the fact that you now owe them a life of honor to the family name. Aristotle makes the same argument as Confucius about the importance of friendships by stating that “friendship is a form of excellence. (Book VIII page 208)”. He goes a step further by stating that a community should be based on friendship (philia). Which then goes on to talk about the family aspect as an ethical institution that capitalizes with meaning and value on the natural bonds of kinship and love. Every relationship you have with someone is a form of friendship but the forms of friendship are different in family bonds. There are three types of friendships: (1) friendship built on utility...... middle of paper...... not keeping xen. To complete my research I determined that even though both philosophers were from different time periods and we traveled a lot, they both had similar ideas. Both share ideals about government, friendships, and family roles. Every philosopher thought that life is a long corridor towards the goal which is the end of our life. Both had a way of living life so that they could achieve their desired ends. Aristotle was the concept of happiness and since it was the supreme good he also made it abundant. While Confucius is a long list of things you should complete every time you get the key to my door. The goal of these works was to understand what is the best way for man to live and respond by performing moral acts, being involved in one's church or local community. Aristotle and Confucius were more similar than they would have you believe.
