The Impact of Smoking The current problem with smoking in today's society is that it not only kills people's wallets, but it literally kills people themselves. In many cases around the world men and women young and old are dying from lung cancer because they are actually smokers and tobacco companies couldn't care less because they are making money. Smoking causes pulmonary emphysema which is a buildup of tar in the lungs due to the chemical nicotine found in cigarettes. Dictionary.com defines smoke as the visible vapor and gases given off by a burning or smoking substance, especially the gray, brown, or blackish mixture of gases and suspended carbon particles resulting from the burning of grass, coal, or other organic material. So the real problem with smoking ultimately is that it kills people in today's society, but there is one point that they can argue that is the choice to smoke or not harm yourself or stay healthy by not smoking. In exchange, cigarette companies have created a new type of electric cigarettes that give the same effect but simply do not contain harmful chemicals. Many products and organizations have been created to help smokers quit, but they can't just contact and connect with tobacco users, they have patches that people wear for about 3 weeks and decrease their need to smoke. It is up to people to decide whether they will smoke or not, but it is up to tobacco companies to provide a product that satisfies their customers and will not only keep them safe but keep them loyal. Unfortunately they did not stay true to a healthy product and this is a growing problem today. Smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer in all people who smoke. The problem of smoking... middle of paper... they may not care about people's health status, they just want to profit from it. Smoking has had many problems with people's health status and the well-being of others. So the government created some agencies that would otherwise help people in a situation involving smoking. These agencies not only protect people's health, but provide support to those who need it and give stability to anyone trying to quit and other options if a person is struggling. Some of these agencies include ATF, AHRQ, IHS, and NCI, the National Cancer Institute, particularly regarding smoking and the effects of long exposure to nicotine and other harmful substances in cigarettes. One of the most important agencies is the NCI-National Cancer Institute because it directly deals with the causes and harmful effects of cancer in smoking patients.
