Behind the BurqaA social issue raised in the book, The Swallows of Kabul is Inequality. It is defined as the condition of inequality; lack of equality; or disparity. In the book, gender inequality is well demonstrated as a social issue as there are many restrictions against women. The book is set in Kabul, Afghanistan, under Taliban rule, from 1996 to 2001, and follows the lives of two very different couples. Gender inequality is defined as the unequal treatment or perception of individuals based on their gender. It is a worldwide problem that continues to occur and leads to mistreatment of others, discrimination, disrespect, and so on. Gender inequality exists due to male dominance, biological hormones and lack of education. First, one effect of gender inequality is male dominance. Male dominance is very evident in the novel. An example is where males do what they want. "In that case, what are you waiting for? Throw her out. Divorce her and get yourself a strong, healthy virgin who knows how to keep quiet and serve her master without making a sound. I don't want to see you talk to yourself like a mental patient again, not to road, and especially not because of a woman. It would be an offense to God and his prophet (Khadra, 28) This shows how men are considered superior beings man as the head of the house and the primary figure, who rules over his wife and children. This leads men to live according to this philosophy as in the book. Another example in the book that shows male dominance is found at the beginning of the novel, when there is a detailed description of the public stoning of a woman. “In an indescribable… in the center of the paper… so much so that you are polite in the sense that you treat people appropriately, with respect, equality and fairness. In conclusion, by showing evidence of the gender inequality effects of male dominance, biological hormones, and lack of education, we can identify the problem of social injustice evident in the novel. These points are all key factors that support the topic of gender inequality. Despite living in such a large country as Canada, there are still problems we face in society today related to gender inequality that still happens today and is of major concern in different parts of the world. It is a social problem that must be solved before it worsens and causes harm to others. Some attempts can be made to address this problem is through education, public awareness and people talking to each other.
