In society, human beings live their lives following the norms that a strong presence, such as that of the media, implements in our society. These norms and standards followed by individuals influence their behavior and personality, especially in the early years (i.e. adolescence). Teens spend much of their lives on social media and through these media they become more violent, ignorant and depressed due to their body image based on what the media deems acceptable. Adolescent violence is caused by excessive exposure to violence from social media. More than 1000 studies demonstrate that violence seen through the media increases aggressive behavior, particularly in boys (TELEVISION, 2006). The longer a teenager watches violent television programs, the more likely he or she is to exhibit violent behavior in real-life settings. Statistics show that the typical American child will see more than 200,000 acts of violence, including more than 16,000 murders before the age of 18, through the media (Anderson 2003). This large amount of violence seen is what drives adolescents to believe our society's norms regarding violent behavior. More violent shows seen across the media result in an increase in violent behavior among teenagers. Information, which is consumed through the media, does not represent the norms of society. The media removes the consequences of violence in real life and does not show a realistic understanding of violent acts (Powell, 2013). Furthermore, misinterpretation of consequences causes adolescents to believe that actions have few or no consequences and lead to violent behavior. It is proven that the media can also lead to violent behavior by promoting influential and popular people (Powell, 2013). Most teenagers idolize the influence ... middle of paper ... guarantees the achievement of social goals (e.g. eating disorders). Individuals who are more exposed to the media are more likely to be dissatisfied with their body image. The media influences individuals to adapt to violent behavior, obtain unrealistic body images, and distract them from education. The media is propaganda and is used to exploit individuals to follow the standard norms produced and influenced by them to sell or promote their products and equipment, etc. Media exposure must be minimized to reduce the negative impact on individuals in society, especially adolescents who are vulnerable and coming into their own at the time. As a society, we revolve around the use of technology in our daily lives. We must understand the effects the media has on our society and consider whether it is advancing or holding back our progress as human beings.
