Topic > Narendra Modi: Friend or Foe - 2054

On May 16, 2014, Narendra Modi was elected with a landslide victory as the new Prime Minister of India. This is the biggest victory in more than thirty years: Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) obtained 282 seats in Parliament and will have a majority government. Modi takes office after a successful tenure as Prime Minister of the Indian state of Gujarat. While in office, Modi ushered in many new developments that helped spur the economic revitalization of the state. Since Modi has little experience in foreign policy, it is difficult to predict what his relations with the international community will be like. If recent news is any indication, it appears that Modi is looking to develop cooperative partnerships with many nations. In the US, Barack Obama called Modi shortly after winning the elections and invited the Prime Minister to the US for bilateral talks. Narendra Modi seems to be doing whatever it takes to steer India in the right direction; however, its true identity will be tested when India inevitably faces a crisis situation. Biography of Narendra Modi Narendra Modi was born to a working class family on 17 September 1950 in Vadnagar, which is now modern Gujarat. Growing up in a family of grocers, Modi was not the best student; however, he excelled in drama and debate. His interest in the stage led Modi to want to become a politician. Starting from the age of eight, Modi began attending local political meetings and functions in his community. It was through these meetings that Modi became a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or National Volunteer Organisation. The RSS is an extremely nationalist right-wing Hindu organisation. Starting in 1970 and continuing until 1978, Modi was a field activist for the RSS and moved from the newspaper side to the Intelligence Agency.
