Topic > Pride as a Crime in the Crucible - 697

Many people are very proud of numerous things: their job, their family, their political opinions, even their favorite sport. People make mistakes big and small, but it's how you deal with the situation and the mistake that shows a person's morality and shows who they might be. “The only crime is pride,” Sophocles, is still held to be true; for example, pride itself can cloud a person's mind and cause him to commit the crimes he has committed. Pride is thought to be a good thing, but in many cases the opposite is proven. Even if there is some truth in the statement “the only crime is pride”, the crimes/mistakes caused by pride are not forgivable and “giving up” doesn't help at all; pride is not only proving that you are right, but also not seeming "weak" in the eyes of others. Pride not only clouds judgment, but can also cause worse situations such as death or unnecessary punishment. In the play The Crucible, much is caused by the character's pride; for example, when everything was about to take shape: Abigail running away, no one willing to confess to witchcraft, and three famous people lined up to be hanged, Danforth would not have postponed or completely stopped the hangings of Proctor, Rebecca, and Goody Nurse because if he had carrying out the other twelve hangings for the same reason would not have been "fair". Danforth's "pride" was not only in being "right" but also in not looking like a weakling in front of the people of the town. Danforth didn't "give in" because he didn't want to but because if he had it wouldn't have seemed like the "right" thing to do. Pride overrode Danforth's judgment and made him arrogant: all he wanted to do was seem right and please the people of the country; which caused the death of innocent people and the freedom of... middle of paper......er to be shown with “shame”. Because for a man his name is something to be proud of and actually it is for any man, because he keeps his name intact, unlike women, and he cannot leave his family, especially his son, with the same of have their fathers name displayed in front of the church. So instead, he tore up the paper and prepared for the death sentence. The prosecutor's pride initially caused problems and made mistakes that could have been avoided, but his pride in his name can be seen as a good thing. Pride is a powerful thing. In some cases it can be seen as a positive or negative thing. If the person renounces what he has committed, this does not necessarily make his pride “the only crime”, but also its result. Society sees the goodness of others from their actions, but can be blinded by what others tell them and believe that they know what they know.
