Malcolm Gladwell is an Anglo-Canadian journalist, speaker and bestselling author. In his best-selling book “Outliers,” Malcolm Gladwell talks about success and what patterns correlate with it. He claims that how much time you spend on a particular task, especially 10,000 hours, can take you to an elite level of proficiency. This in turn can provide someone with the tools to enable them to succeed. Using historical quotes, models, and real-life examples, Gladwell establishes his 10,000-hour rule. Thanks to his informed but calm tone, Gladwell seems to display credibility. The intended audience could be people who love statistics or people who want to succeed and find possible ways to do so. Gladwell uses a logical appeal to show the patterns he has found through his studies of success. He backs up his claim with damning statistics that back it up. He also uses similes to better understand how to connect the patterns he found for the elite in a given activity to other things. The paper is probably the best means Gladwell uses to convince the reader of his thesis for the 10,000 hour rule. Use the Foil to compare success to legends like Bill Gates, The Beatles and Bill Joy. Overall Gladwell uses logos, similes and foils to support his claim of the 10,000 hour rule. In "Outliers" Malcolm Gladwell organizes his argument for their being a rule for general success by showing statistics of defined successful people such as Bill Gates, Billy Joy and the Beatles. He also uses a Berlin music academy to demonstrate his rule. It presents a thesis that Bill Gates, the Beatles and the violinist who attends the music academy may have been born with an innate talent, but that is not the only… paper medium… and how long has it practiced. This is a great method of convincing due to the success of both the Beatles and Bill Gates. As stated before, Malcolm Gladwell presents a calm tone that does not seem to support his argument but at the same time his argument is semi-flawed. It shows that there can be trends and patterns that can correlate with success. He successfully demonstrated this by telling the success stories of Bill Gates, the Beatles and the soon-to-be successful choir. Even if he makes a couple of assumptions here and there like the academy kids, his thesis is solid. (where? give an example) Malcolm Gladwell has a lasting effect on the way you see life, if role models can be shown in overall success, what else can role models be. This piece really makes you think about things you may have never considered before and may have never accepted.
