Topic > Prisons can lead individuals to reoffend - 1613

IntroductionCurrently, statistics indicate that 60% of criminals have reoffended at some point in their lives. Many argue that prison causes an individual to reoffend, however many oppose this belief and argue that other factors cause a high rate of recidivism. This controversial topic raises multiple questions regarding prison and its role in recidivism, as well as what other factors may cause an individual to reoffend. The question therefore raised is: “to what extent does prison induce an individual to reoffend?” This question will help determine the main factors that lead people to reoffend, as well as provide insight into additional statistics related to the topic. Numerous sources have been identified and critically analyzed to help identify the causes that drive individuals to reoffend. The following report will focus on the points for and against prison causing high recidivism rates, the conclusions that have been drawn, and ways to reduce the number of individuals who commit multiple crimes. Basic ResearchThe term recidivist refers to an individual who has committed more than one criminal act. As previously mentioned, current statistics indicate that 60% of adult criminals who have been incarcerated have reoffended at some point. It has also been found that 80% of juvenile (or juvenile) criminals reoffend. Prison is defined as a legally sanctioned facility that holds individuals who have committed a serious crime. Prisons are generally defined into three categories; low, medium and high security, or they can have areas of each security. Generally, low-security prisons include prisoners who pose fewer threats to society, and these prisoners have more freedom. In maximum security... middle of paper... commit another crime. Counseling sessions are provided individually to each inmate and are run by psychologists and social workers. Further counseling is offered to offenders who need additional support while in prison or who are struggling to cope with prison. Along with this, counseling helps criminals understand how they can adapt to the outside world which, in turn, gives inmates the chance to become more socially acceptable once released. Studies have shown that criminals who receive counseling are less likely to reoffend upon release. Therefore, these counseling and self-help sessions need to be implemented within prisons to reduce the recidivism rate. Additionally, prisoners are offered counseling sessions after their release. This helps them control their actions and teaches them how to behave in society.
